Arcanum

  • A beautiful planet 4 times larger than Earth. Inhabited by creatures deemed nonexistent by Earthians.

Geography:

Water:

The planet itself is a sphere, 75% of it being covered in land. In  the Northernmost portion of Arcanum lies the only lake on all the planet, Yuridyn. Yuridyn takes up approximately 1/5 of Arcanum's surface area, it's depth unknown. From Yuridyn, six rivers sprout from different corners of the lake and travel straight down Arcanum, splitting it's land into six regions. In the Southernmost portion of Arcanum, instead of coming together, the six rivers curve and create a large, spiral pattern. The rivers never merge, they each only seem to stop at a certain point for reasons unknown. The land where this spiral takes place is named Hurikné and the small, circular piece of land in the center of the spiralling rivers is known as Serenice.
Aside from Yuridyn and its six rivers, no other forms of ground water exist anywhere on the planet.

Vegetation:

Trees- Many different trees have many different characteristics, but the one thing that they all have in common is that their leaves are filled with water. How much water they contain depends on the tree, but all leaves have water and all trees have leaves.

  • More information will be added as it is revealed.

Floating Isles:

High above the surface of Arcanum, so high that they are unreachable by any living beings, whether or not they are blessed with the gift of flight, are islands in the sky. It is unknown how many there are, but like clouds, they float slowly across the sky. Each island that has been spotted is a notably different shape than the others.

  • More information will be added as it is revealed.

The Regions:

  • There are six strips of land that cover the majority of Arcanum, each separated by rivers too wide and too deep for land creatures to swim across.

Renibus- A region covered in a blanket of forest. Meadows and clearings are hard to find, but they do exist. It is easy to get hopelessly lost should one lose their way, especially at night, which is why it is common for Renibian parents to focus most of their young's teachings in tracking and survival.
Small villages can be found in the forests of Renibus. Several different creatures can sometimes be found living together in these villages.

  • More information about other Regions will be added as information is revealed.

Arcanum's Inhabitants:

From humanoids, to fire-breathers, to water creatures, to rock eaters, Arcanum is a world full of creatures big and small, gentle and fierce. It is said that there are so many beings in this world that it would be foolish to even try and document them all.

Creatures:

Centaurs- Half-horse, half man, Centaurs are revered as being noble and wise. Centaurs have been the leaders of many great armies, and in some tales, the trainers of Human Heroes. Centaurs are quite proud, run very fast, and some can be known to be quite attracted to alcohol.

Dire Wolves- The good force opposing Wargs, Dire Wolves are large wolfish creatures often mistaken for wild dog monsters. In actuality, Dire wolves are quite gentle to those with good hearts and intents, but can smell evil from a mile away. Intellegent, deadly, and haters of evil, Dire Wolves are the guardians of the Forest.

Dragons- Large, deadly, intelligent beasts that often breathe fire, acid, ice, and many other things, Dragons are still quite a mystery to most, communicating with few others but the Dragon Riders. Dragons are fearsome creatures, renowned in battle yet wise beyond human comprehension and often gentle at heart.

Dryads- Tree-spirits. They live in trees. Satyrs chase after them. They are usually meek in characteristics, beautiful creatures, and mostly, but not exclusively, female.

Dwarves- Usually short and stocky, with plentiful face and body hair, dwarves are creatures of the earth, tunnelers or miners, and are often attracted to shiny things such as gems or metals. They are workers of the forge, expert weapon and armour smiths, and are often hailed as The Mountain Folk.

Elves- Elves, the fair folk. Tall, short, plump, slender, elves come in many shapes and sizes but can often be set apart by their distinctly pointed ears. The elves are lovers of beauty, often singing, dancing, writing poetry or blending with nature.

Goblins- Usually small and greenish, goblins have pointed ears like elves, but are much more mischievous in nature, often known for stealing things like gold and silver; goblins are thieves by blood and often untrustworthy. Experts with daggers and throwing knives, goblins are slightly unorthodox fighters, fighting in hordes, overwhelming by sheer numbers. Goblins are also immune to fire and can sometimes even breath it.

Gorgons- Humanoids, usually females, with snakes for hair. Whether or not they actually do have hair depends on the Gorgon. They do in fact have the power to turn others to stone through eye contact, but this is not a power that happens automatically. They have to will it to happen.
Gorgons can not stand environments that are too hot or too cold.

Humans- Highly intelligent mammals with tender skin and barely any hair on their bodies, excluding the head. They walk straight up on their hind legs and have these things called 'fingers' on the ends of their forepaws. They are always seen wearing clothes. These creatures specialize in crafting weapons, armor and traps and building strong shelters. Though they are vulnerable due to the lack of fangs and claws, they are very capable of strong attacks and defenses. Their greatest strength comes from teamwork.
Humans are also capable of adapting to any environment.

Mermaids- Ah, Mermaids. The big confusion. Mermaids are simply put, (and directly translated), Sea-Women. They are woman-like sea creatures, often quite beautiful, until you get close. With razor sharp fangs and vicious claws, Mermaids are quite capable of defending themselves if need be, but they spend most of their time luring unsuspecting sailors to a watery demise.

Naiads- Simialar to Dryads, Naiads are the river and lake spirits. They are often confused with Mermaids, and although similar, are still very different. Naiads live in rivers, streams, ponds, or lakes, and are often seen peacefully weaving baskets under water. They are quite protective of their homes, however, and are known to have quite irritable tempers.

Orcs- Orcs, the cousins of Goblins, are pretty much pure evil by nature. Born of the tainted earth, they fight with large swords or clubs. Orcs are rather ugly, ad often associated with darkness and bad luck.

Satyrs- Similar to Centaurs, Satyrs, or Fauns as some call them, are half goat, half man (Traditionally from the bottom up). Satyrs are lovers of music and nature, somewhat alike to Elves, but are much a part of different Lore. They are skilled in running away from battle, and being Heroes' sidekicks. They also tend to chase after Dryads.

Sprites- Sprites are the only known Faerie Folk to posses wings. They are short, sometimes greenish, and gloatful by nature, proud of their natural flight and even more so of their beauty, they flitter around not only causing the occasional trouble but also seducing those unwary of the Sprites' charmspeak.

Trollocs- Brutal, grotesqe beasts without any specific shape or form, Trollocs are the hybrids gone wrong. Feathered, furred, snouted, and sometimes even goat-legged, these ferocious creatures attack in fists of a hundered or more, hunting in packs and seeking only blood, for the fun of killing. Unlike their distant cousins the Urgals, who kill for glory, or the Orcs who kill for evil, Trollocs kill for sheer enjoyment.

Urgals- Beast-like humanoid creatures, Urgals live in the hills and mountains. They usually have large, ram-like horns on their heads, and talk in a guttural, harsh language. Urgals fear fire and dragons, though in some legends, they are known to be the fourth kind of Dragon Riders.

Unicorn- Large, graceful horse-like or goat-like creatures a long, spiraling horn projecting from the forehead, cloven hooves and a goat's beard in some cases. They usually have white, light gray or tan fur colors, but the shade, and sometimes the color itself, changes with their surrounding environment. (i.e. dark colors at night, dull colors during fog or cold, brown in foliage) They are like the chameleons of mammals that can only be seen if they want to be seen. The only exceptions to this are those who possess innocent minds, such as children. The horn of a unicorn has the power to purify poisoned water and heal the sickness of other creatures.

Wargs- These giant, evil cousins to Wolves are fearsome beasts, fighting with fang and claw, appearing in menacing packs and often large enough to take down a young elephant or Troll alone. Wargs are the arch-enemies of Dire Wolves, and are allies with the Werewolves. Wargs are creatures of the dark night, hunting under the moon; their howling cries can sometimes be heard from miles away.

  • More information will be added as more creatures appear.

Characters:

RP'd by Wildwing:

Claira: Dryad-Human Hybrid

  • Lanky young woman about 5' 7" and the age of a 15 year old human. She has curly, shoulder length black hair with long, spiked bangs that hang over her emerald green eyes. She has fair skin and slightly pointed ears. She usually wears a blue shirt with long, shredded sleeves over white wrappings, brown pants and brown boots. On a chain necklace she wears around her neck hangs a silver ring, too large for her to wear. She is a Renubian from a small, peaceful, yet nameless, village; her parents' hometown. She claims Aisubi as her sister.
Interesting Fact: Claira loves pranks and practical jokes.

Aisubi: Gorgon

  • Aisubi is a short, thin young woman, about 5' 5" in height and her age is equivelent to a 17 year old human. She has light brown, snake-like scales that cover her body except for her arms just above the elbows, her legs, and her face, excluding her cheeks. Her human skin is a lighter brown than her scales. Her wavy, waist-length hair is dark brown and wild. She doesn't have bangs and usually wears her hair down. She currently has five snakes, each the same color as her hair and nearly identical to each other in size and shape. They share the same eye color as Aisubi, which is gold. Her pupils are slits in the center of her irises. Aisubi usually wears a dark green, robe-like jacket with no sleeves over tight black wrappings, light green tights and black boots that go to the middle of her shins. She also has a long white bandage wrapped and tied around her right forearm. She is a Runibian, the claimed sister of Claira.
Interesting fact: Aisubi named her snakes due to unique patterns found on their heads; Clover, Spade, Diamond, Stripes and Spots.

RP'd by DwelleroftheEarth

Li'aam: Elf

  • Li'aam is an Elf of unknown Elf age, but his maturity is about that of a 17 year-old human. He is 5'10", with shaggy reddish gold hair and bright blue eyes. He is muscular in a fluid way, build for grace and athletic power rather than brute strength. Li'aam is from Renibus, in the same village as Claira and Aisubi. He is almost always found with his companion Mood Dragon, Aardan. Li'aam carries a small dagger in his belt with a bright blue stone set in the hilt. This is what he uses to channel and store what little magic he can handle.

Aardan: Mood Dragon

  • Aardan is a male mood dragon, which means he is about the size of a house cat. He usually stays a dark shade of green, although being a mood dragon he can change to any color he wishes, though this somewhat relates to whatever mood he is in. He has sharp claws, a line of small double spikes down his back, and a long, whip-like tail. Aardan is from Renibus, in the same village as Claira and Aisubi, though he goes wherever his companion, Li'aam, goes.

Alright, let's get this RP started now, shall we? Smile )

She was running through the forest. Running for her life. Her flesh was burned, on her arms, on her legs, on her face. Her once smooth scales were now reduced to cracked, ugly charcoal. Her body begged to stop, begged to drop there, dead. Her body moved awkwardly, the agony slowling her down. The acrid, smoked air filled her chest with poison air. She could barely breathe. She had to keep going. To keep running through the flames of the burning forest. She didn't want to die. She didn't want to die!
"Heeeeere snakey, snakey~!" a voice purred. She couldn't pinpoint the direction of it's source. She couldn't tell if it came from her left or her right.
"Snakey, snakey~! Where are you running to?" the same voice laughed, crackling like the flames around her. It was loud, and it surrounded her.
She gasped for much needed air, but there was none. The fire was too big, the smoke too much. She collapsed facefirst on the smoldering ground.
She didn't want to die. She truly didn't want to die. It was too soon. She needed more time. She needed more time to live!
Something stepped into her line of vision-one large set of bronze, razor sharp claws. Right in front of her face.
"Aaaw! Snakey's all tired out!" a rumbling voice above her purred in pleasure. Hot breath blew across the back of her neck.
"I wanted to play some more!" the voice laughed cruelly, "But it seems dinner has begun early."
She didn't want to die. But it seemed she was going to anyway.

The young gorgon suddenly jolted upward, gasping for breath. She clutched her chest over her racing heart, her golden eyes wide in terror. The hair on her head moved rapidly. Her snakes were upset.
The young women sat, frozen to the spot for several minutes, before shakily reaching one hand back and gently stroking the back of her head.
"Shhh... Shhh... It's okay, everyone. It was only a dream. Only a bad nightmare," she cooed shakily, trying to calm her snakes.
Yes. That's what it had been. Incredibly vivid, yes, but only a nightmare.
She was in the forest, but there was no fire, and there was no danger. She had fallen asleep against the root of the tree she was beside and had been asleep for... She didn't know.
Sunlight streamed down through the canopy of leaves above her. It was still daytime.
The gorgon looked skyward, subconsciously lowering her arms to the ground before hugging herself.
"..."
Bringing her legs up to her chest, the gorgon lowered her head and rested her forehead against her knees.
"...I'm sick of this," she whispered to herself.
Immediately after saying this, a figure jumped out from behind the tree and shouted directly at the gorgon.
"AISUBI!!"
"YAAAHHH!!"
Screaming, the young gorgon fell over on her side, feeling like her heart had just stopped. Meanwhile, the figure, a nymph-like young woman about her age, clutched her stomach and just laughed out loud.
"HAHAHA!! Y-You sh-should've s-seen the l-look on your face!!" the woman laughed.
"C-Claira?!" the gorgon, Aisubi, gasped, pushing herself to sitting position and staring wide-eyed at hysterical Human-Dryad. Then her gaze narrowed into a murderous death glare.
"WHAT THE HECK WERE YOU THINKING, YOU NEARLY KILLED MY HEART!!" she shouted furiously.
Claira only laughed harder, nearly falling over.
The next several minutes were spent with Claira's laughter and Aisubi exerting all her willpower into not turning her friend to stone.
"S-Sorry," Claira finally giggled after calming down, "I couldn't help it!"
Aisubi made an angry hissing sound and pointedly turned her back on her with crossed arms. Claira only giggled again, not seeming fazed at all.
"Hey, so Dad's worried. You've been gone a while. He sent me to get you," she stated with a smile.
Aisubi didn't reply. The snakes in her hair, however, raised up from their nest and glared at Claira, hissing in unison. Eyes widening, Claire immediately backed up a few steps and held her hands up in surrender.
"Whoa! Okay! I get it! You're mad! Sorry I scared you!" she quickly said, "But seriously, Dad needs you to come back. So let's go!"
The gorgon threw a dirty glare over her shoulder at the Hybrid. Claire paled and backed up another step. "...Are you really still mad?" she asked unsurely.
Aisubi kept her glare for another moment before turning to Claira. Without saying a word, she started walking, not even looking at Claira as she walked passed her. One of the snakes tried to snap at her face, though.
"...I'll take that as a yes," Claira sighed a moment later. Then she trudged after her upset friend.
Hopefully the village won't be too mad that I put her into a mood, she thought.

Li'aam was walking through the forest. The only forest he had ever known, bigger that comprehension almost. Aardan was leaping from tree branch to branch by his side, easily keeping pace as Li'aam strolled along a well-traveled yet not always obvious path that led towards his village. He was coming back from hunting, and had a few small tree and ground rodents hung form his belt to prove it. He slipped by a large tree, unconsciously touching the rough, wavy bark on a knot that resembled a dragon's face. Aardan gave a chitter, leaping onto Li'aam's shoulder, and he smiled, realizing what he had done. The knot had been carved like that by Li'aam when he had first found Aardan not far outside the village, alone and starving. Now whenever he passed the tree, he touched it for good luck and to always remember. An image of one of the rodents popped into his head, and he chuckled. "When we get home, you can eat, Aardan." The Mood dragon communicated with his chosen Companion by a strong mental link that could send images, sentances, even tastes and smells, but Aardan almost always communicated with images, explaining that words were odd to him and over-descriptive. Li'aam stepped lightly over a large root, around another bush, and smiled again as the village came into sight. He strode into the midst of the collection of huts and houses, mostly made of wood, and sighed at the feeling of being home.

"A-Aisubi! C-Come on, hold up, will ya? Look, I'm sorry, okay?" Claira's voice pleaded 5 yards behind Li'aam and Aardan. "Come on, Ay-ay! I didn't mean it, I swear!"

The hybrid sighed in exasperation as the gorgon only stormed faster ahead and disappeared into the trees. She slowed to a stop and placed her hand over her eyes, letting out a long, deep sigh.
Well, crap, she thought, If she doesn't kill me before we get home, the others will. I need to find a way to cheer her up before we arrive.
She lowered her arm and looked ahead, not moving from her spot.
...Then again, maybe I could just spend the night out here...

"I can't believe her," the young snake-women hissed, her snakes writhing in agitation as she quickly made her way home, "How dare she do that while in my vulnerable state!"
As she continued stomping through the bushes and seething to herself, she did not realize that she was heading directly toward a certain Elf and his dragon.

Li'aam spun on his heel, hearing a great deal of hissing behind him, and was only slightly surprised to see Aisubi storming out of the trees. "Let me guess, Claira did something to scare you she thought was funny, am I right?" he said to her as she emerged. Aardan tilted his head to one side, still perched on Li'aam's shoulder, he only was just comfortable with Aisubi's snakes.

Aisubi jolted in surprise and stopped, looking with wide eyes at Li'aam. She stayed rooted to the spot for a second until she realized it was only him. She relaxed.
"Oh. Hey, Li'aam," she said, nodding a greeting. Her eyes shifted over to the dragon and she smiled slightly. "Hey Aardan."
She sighed, bowing her head and slumped her shoulders, nodding in reply. "Ya... That's exactly what happened," she said, rubbing her right arm with her left hand.

Her snakes raised themselves so they could see the elf and the dragon. They tilted their heads at Aardan, hissing a greeting to him. As Aisubi spoke, they lowered themselves and their heads sadly, showing that they shared the Gorgon's emotions. One of them, the one to the furthest left with stripes on it's forehead, rubbed it's head against her cheek in comfort.

Her snakes raised themselves up again, hissing happily.

"Huh?"
At his start, Aisubi looked down at his closed fist in surprise.
"...Um... Red," she replied after looking back at him, curious to see what he had.

She smiled gratefully at the Elf, holding the stone close.

The snakes reacted in a similar way to Aisubi at seeing the rocks. They lowered themselves and crowded Aisubi's face trying to get a better look at the one she held. This caused Aisubi to start blowing at them as if they were strands of hair.
"H-Hey! Girls! You're in my face, would you-!"
She started pushing them away, her face heating up in embarrassment.

But, at seeing the dragon fall off the elf, the young gorgon gave a small huff in laughter. The other snakes immediately took notice and made laughing snake sounds.

"Aaw! Poor Aardi!" the center snake with the diamond on her forehead hissed to the dragon in amusement.

Lol! Sorry!)

The village was bustling with life as the two entered. A group of young child creatures laughed and giggle as they ran across their path, disappearing behind one of the many wooden shelters built around a tree. Meanwhile, inhabitants of the village were constantly appearing and disappearing in sight as the traveled along narrow dirt paths, yelling out quick greetings to each other as they passed. The branches above rustled, signaling that inhabitants were alao passing overhead. It seemed as if everyone was running errands today...
Aisubi smiled at the sight. The village was a cramped place with shelters built too close to each other, in her opinion. This place was as tightly knit as the forest around them, if not even more or so. But this was probably why the villagers seemed so close to each other, she guessed, even despite their differences. She was glad she lived here. She was grateful to have a home in this place.

"...Hmm... Everyone seems busier than usual today..." she said thoughtfully.

[I'm gonna go out on a limb here and throw out some half-decent ideas that could be worked into a thing of beauty...]

Li'aam nodded. "Excited for Festival, I'd assume. Goodness, we haven't seen any other villages in what, the Seven Moons since last Festival?" Aardan gave an excited sound and Li'aam grinned and nodded. "Aardan says, well, it's kinda hard to explain, but I think he's excited as well." (XD because Aardan is stubborn and refuses to use words to communicate)

[So, basically, Arcanum has Seven Moons, which move regularly across the skies, all evenly spaced. A 'Year' measurement would be fourteen Moons, when all seven moons have passed overhead twice. Instead of measuring their calender by the cycle of the sun, as Earthians do, {BTW I love the term Earthians XD} The inhabitants of Arcanum, or at least of Renibus, measure them by that of the Moons. Every Seven moons marks a 'season', there is a wet season and a dry season, at least in Renibus. The Inhabitants of Renibus celebrate the beginnings and ending of these seasons with an age-old tradition knows as Festival, where a group from each Village will go out and visit other Villages, bringing gifts and entertainment. This also provides a ways of sharing news among the many villages of Renibus. Okay, rant-explanation-thing over. XD Was that clear enough? And was it too much?

XD it's okay, I've just gotten used to having a constant Plot to drive RP, it's just so different having an Open-End RP]

Eco...You are a genius. You not only solved my problem concerning how the calendar on Arcanum/Renibus worked, but you gave me an excellent idea! I love it! AND you totally read my mind on the festival thing! Or at least picked up on the hints, lol! Lol Oh man, I love the moon idea! As well as festival and the seasons! Yes, I get it, and this is perfect! I am going to add this to the front page later, and do some brainstorming on details while I'm at it. If you come up with anything else let me know! {And yes, Earthians is amazing XD Maybe I'll make up Arcanum stories about them like we Earthians do for Martians, lol! XD}

lol! hopefully you'll get used to it Lol )

Aisubi's eyes widened. "Oh ya! That is coming up, isn't it?" she asked. She suddenly felt excited. "That's right! Geez, what's wrong with me? I knew this earlier today!" she laughed, "I guess I shouldn't have taken that nap. So how long until Festival again? Three...No, four days?"
She looked at her snakes for confirmation. "Ya, four days?"

[XD Yeah I was like, hmm, my brain just lightbulbed! CX and then it sort of all just came to me. And yeah I sort of picked up that some sort of event was coming soon ]

Li'aam chuckled and nodded. "Four days, yep, and we still have so much to prepare for. I guess the first thing to do would be bake that yal," he said, "Would you care for any, ah, help?" he said the last word uncertainly, as if he was regretting volunteering his assistance. Aardan, who had been exploring some bushes, came back at the mention of help and the uncertainty he felt in Li'aam's mind. He gave an odd noise and scurried away as if trying to hide from the work. "Aww, Aardan, come back!" Li'aam pleaded. "You don't have to really do anything, you know?" he added mentally to the dragon.

Aisubi smirked at Li'aam. She put a finger on her chin as if pondering it over, but really, she already knew the answer to the offer.
"Well... Now that you mention it, I do have quite a few loaves to bake! So yes! I would love the help!" she exclaimed, smiling sweetly at him with a knowing, evil look in her eyes. All five of her snakes turned their attention to Li'aam, and then Aardan, and mirrored the look.

Li'aam gulped and nodded, smiling weakly. "Well, I guess I'll meet you at your house in a few minutes, after I take care of these?" he said, gesturing to the animals hanging from his belt and slowly backing away.

[XD Poor Li'aam Lol]

Aisubi smiled brightly and nodded vigorously, causing her snakes to hiss in annoyance at the sporadic movements. "Sounds good!" she replied, "I'll see you then!"
She turned and started walking off. But she stopped and looked over her shoulder after going a few steps.
"Oh! And Li'aam?" she called.
After a moment of silence, she gave him a toothy smirk that could easily be mistaken for a sneer.
"If you don't keep your word, I will definitely turn you to stone."
She said this in a joking manner, but at the same time, she had this look in her eye that said, 'I'm serious, do not try to weasel your way out of this one'. Her snakes added to this effect by glaring menacingly at the elf. Then, laughing cheerfully, Aisubi turned and skipped down a dirt path, into a grove of trees, and out of sight.

[Yes. Poor Li'aam Lol XD]
